Best bets for December

Report Date: December 3, 2007

December is Red Hot!!

Folks, to say the fishing aboard the Redfish Hunter I, lately has been awesome, is an understatement. Limits of big speckled sea trout have been common. The redfish are still around and biting good. Many oversized reds over the slot of 27 inches have been boated. There are big schools of jack crevalle, bluefish and spanish mackerel everywhere on the flats.

Tailing redfish

On one of our recent trips, I had Frank Klein and his best friend, Jeff on board. These two characters were a hoot. They are two of the most competitive guys I’ve seen in some time. They had a bet on just about anything imaginable; most fish, biggest fish, most species, and on and on.

We sir, they exceeded all their expectations. In a day’s time, they boated 41 big bluefish and jack crevalle on top water plugs. And probably fought and lost that many, also.

These fish were running in big schools and would slam a plug so hard sometimes, it would fly 3 feet out of the water. When it landed again, Bam, they would slam it. My most used phrase that day was: we have a double!! With double hook ups time and time again. Jeff won most fish boated with 21 and Frank had 20. But Frank had big fish with a 7 lb Bluefish.

Keep in mind, we fish strickly with light to medium light tackle. I use Daiwa BG 10’s and 13’s spooled with 10 pound test with a 50 lb mono leader for landing these toothy fish. It’s not uncommon to take 5-10 minutes to land one of these bruisers as they are worthy fighters and make long runs, pulling drag and bending rods double.

At the end of the day, tired arms, in a good sort of way, are quite common. One client emailed me back that she was too sore to play golf the next day and had to rest. Nothing wrong with that, the way I see it.

Gator trout....

So, take a day off, call in sick, or just tell your boss you’re going fishing and get out on the flats of Crystal River, Ozello and Homosassa and enjoy some of this action.

Or, you can give me a call and book a day and leaving the driving to us. We furnish everything you need and we guarantee you will have a good time and catch fish.

Until next time…..May the Great Master of all fishermen be with us til we meet again. God Bless.
