Redfishing with 3 generations....
Report Date: October 12, 2007
Recently, I had the previledge of fishing with Calvin and Ed Booth and grandpa Gene Green, three generations of anglers.
We left the dock at MacRae's Bait and Tackle on the Homosassa River and headed through the backcountry in search of big fish. We passed mangrove islands, creeks, cays, and rivers of sawgrass as we winded our way to our first fishing spot.
The tide was coming in and we had almost perfect conditions for catching the highly prized, hard fighting redfish.
Granpa Gene Green of Dade City, Fl., was the first to hook up. You could tell there were many years of experience under that cap of his as he boated the first of many reds.
Then Calvin got into the action and then Ed. Everyone was catching redfish. However, it seemed every spot we tried, Grandpa Gene always caught the first and the most. Must have something to do with experience....
Before the day was done Ed would be top angler though. As the tide was reaching high, and our redfish bite slowed, we moved to one last redfish hotel I knew.

Calvin and Ed Booth with grandpa Gene Green-Nice Redfish
|
Before long Ed's drag began to scream and his rod was bent double as his line zipped through the clear water next to a mangrove island. Something big was on... He fought the fish as it headed around the back of the boat, then around the front, then a long run after another long run, all the while Ed was doing the big fish shuffle moving around the boat to keep up with the fish.
Finally, after a long battle he brought the bruiser up to the waiting net...A big Bubba redfish, weighing in around the 9 pound figure.
What a battle on light tackle and 10 pound test!!!
We brought him onboard The RedfishHunter and he measured out at exactly 26 7/8 inches. A keeper by a whisker. This fish is a tournament fisherman's dream. But for this crew, he would be a backyard grill's dream.
If you want to see how to cook a redfish like this see my previous report on "Redfish Recipe"
Well, we ended the day with a nice ride back through the backcountry down The St. Martin's River, past Ozello. I showed Gene, Lykes Island and old cracker lodge, owned for many years by The Lykes Company, which Gene had worked with for many years.
Another great day on the water with friends enjoying the great outdoors, God has so graciously given to us to respect and take care of.
Until next time......
Captain Ed
